The Oadby Plastics Extension project clearly demonstrates how EOS, as a light gauge steel frame provider has the capability to accommodate and custom manufacture for both small and large scale schemes.
Working with their new client, Main Contractor Warwick Burt, EOS provided a bespoke oversail system for a rapid extension on an existing factory unit and the creation of a new office building.
DESIGN & EOS INVOLVEMENT
The new extension utilised the EOS oversail system which stands three storeys high alongside the original office and factory space, and is connected to the hot rolled steel (HRS) frame of the new structure through the use of EOS’ oversail brackets.
EOS precision-designed ancillary brackets and angles to ensure that the extension appears united with the original structure. The oversail system could then be easily incorporated into the hot rolled steel primary structure.
When it came to framing the brick piers of the build, EOS were required to provide a metal solution that was, literally, outside normal specifications. Steel was suspended outside the line of the main structural frame, projecting it out of the building. This enabled the installation of a continuous full height canvas, which allowed the facade to connect back. Whilst the considerable height of the studs created an obstacle, this was overcome through the use of off the shelf bracketry which supported the whole facade.
The large open spans of the HRS structure demanded consistent co-ordination with the steelworker, as the team had to endeavour to keep the restraint brackets corresponding with the beam layout of the primary structure.
The close liaison with the customer throughout the build, as well as with the engineer and steelwork contractor on the HRS primary “shed”, meant that any challenges were easily and effectively overcome.
This level of cooperation, especially during the interfacing with roofing and brick pier features, despite the tough challenges posed, became one of the highlights of this project.
Eddie Moss, Project Manager at Warwick Burt commented: “We were very pleased with the professionalism shown by all the team at EOS throughout this project. They were of great assistance in a specialist field relatively new to our company.
From the initial sales negotiation, they had excellent communication throughout, provided detailed design drawings, gave technical assistance, provided site inspections, ensured prompt delivery and smooth coordination, and gave product training and support. We wouldn’t hesitate in using their services again in the future.”
