Edgar Wood Academy

Designed by architects Sheppard Robson the new £17 million Edgar Wood Academy was procured via the Department for Education’s (DfE’s) Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) Framework. The secondary school for 900 students serves local communities around Rochdale and is operated by the Altus Education Partnership.

Wates Construction appointed EOS to custom design, engineer and manufacture an advanced light steel Pre-Assembled Frames (PAF) infill system to ensure the new academy complies with the regulatory 70% Premanufacture Value (PMV) set within the DfE’s MMC framework agreement.

With a footprint of 6,720 m2 the Edgar Wood Academy comprises a three-storey teaching block encompassing 23 general classrooms and 34 specialist classrooms, a sports hall, sports pitches, soft and hard play areas together with car parking.

Altus Education Partnership believe in holistic education and improving achievements through a high-quality environment. The new building upholds these values creating warm welcoming teaching and leisure spaces delivering aesthetic appeal and architectural impact.

SYSTEMS APPROACH

Through the collaborative expertise of Etex brands, EOS, Siniat, Promat and FSi – Pre-Assembled Frames deliver higher quality, fire resistant light steel frame buildings to meet the stringent demands of education projects.

The custom-manufactured non-loadbearing PAF infill systems were delivered to site as assembled panelised units encapsulating light steel framing and external Siniat Weather Defence sheathing ready for glass mineral wool insulation and Siniat internal wall linings to be applied onsite.

PAF systems have been subjected to robust testing regimes for fire, acoustic, weathering, airtightness, mechanical performance and are supported by a 30-year product and performance Etex warranty.

Fire tested to 60 minutes to EN1364-1 in both directions, PAF systems are engineered for structural performance to the latest Eurocodes and manufactured to BS EN ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Thermal performance is achieved using combinations of boarding and insulation. Only tested configurations are available for selection.

Pre-Assembled Frames achieve a robust, highly insulated and airtight building envelope, reducing energy and maintenance costs throughout the lifetime of the Edgar Wood Academy.

By using our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) verified range of EOS light steel framing, BBA Certified Siniat Weather Defence external sheathing board, and Siniat Frameboard – these unitised systems have been tested and assessed for compliance with the latest regulations and standards to ensure robust and reliable design performance.

Delivering high levels of offsite added value, the specification of our PAF system was fundamental in achieving a 30% saving on the build programme and the mandated 70% PMV value by the DfE Framework.
